Dear Readers,

I am still here -- I do promise that. The last few weeks have been filled with lovely wedding projects and packing the studio carefully for our big move. I'm glad to say that, although I sit here surrounded by boxes and dripping paint cans, the moving is complete. The computer is back up and running and blogging will resume soon!

For now, I'll leave you with this photo -- the view from my new window. I love my little birdie friend, who seems to spend much of his time in that very spot. Can't wait for his tree to have leaves soon.

Moving Mondays

This room (in the new nest) will likely be Simple Ink's main office. The wall color, well, it has to go. And so does Aerosmith. (Although I found this interesting, considering the Simple Ink slogan is "Dream Big." Spooky.)

I'm taking suggestions on wall colors. Any ideas? At this point, the office has a yellow/grey theme, based on some great Amy Butler fabric I scored on Etsy last year. Should I stick with that? And isn't that little window box cute? Makes me happy.

I'm making up a batch of new magnets for a really fun store that carries an awesome mix of home wares, gifts and clothing. This photo doesn't really do justice to the vibrant colors in the magnets... but I liked how their pretty glass domes looked in the sunshine.

I spend a lot of time pouring over which ink color to mix, which paper weight to choose, how many replications to print. But this afternoon was a great reminder that sometimes there shouldn't be any pouring over any of these things. Colors should just be picked, used and enjoyed. And who cares if it's never duplicated. It's fun. And lovely. And cheap.

I love this little ribbon organizer featured in last month's Better Homes and Gardens magazine. All of our wholesale orders of greeting cards and gift enclosures get wrapped in bundles with satin ribbon before shipping, so there's quite an array of ribbon to be organized. This mesh idea would keep everything so tidy! Love!

Save the Date Magnets

I burned the midnight oil to make up a bunch of these sweet Save the Dates. We went for flat printing on these to save on cost, but they're backed with a magnet to add a special touch. Hopefully they'll become fixtures on many fridges. My favorite touch is the bride and groom's monogram carved on the tree... to be reprised on the formal letterpress invitation soon. More on that to come.

A Little Grammar... a Little Fun.

This grammar poster I discovered yesterday by The Oatmeal kind of made my day. Maybe I thought it was so funny because, well, I've never been great with the darned semicolon. Or maybe it's because, if I didn't run Simple Ink, I'd like to be an English teacher.

There is more to the poster beyond what I've shown above and there are many more great ones -- some grammar related, some just plain funny. (Like 10 Things You Need to Stop Tweeting About and How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You.) Buy the semicolon poster here.

Wishin' & Hopin'

For more than a year now, we've been looking for a new home for our little family and for Simple Ink. It feels like a long search. A few times I've gotten my hopes up... but things haven't quite fallen into place.

Then, on my birthday last Friday, the most perfectest place of all came up. In need of love (cleaning, painting, hole-filling, water damage fixing... oh, and some appliances), but on a nice quiet street where Ben can learn to ride a bike. And, ah, those three lovely windows in the garage. So perfect for a printing studio.

The catch is that we're not the only ones who thought it was the perfectest place ever. Someone else did too. Two someones. We won't know until the end of the week who is the lucky winner. A week of pins and needles... in a race where I'm pretty sure we're the underdogs.

I don't like to ask things of you, dear readers. But if you'd say a little prayer for me and my little nest, well, I'd truly appreciate it.

Update, 3-2-10: Thanks, everyone, for all of the lovely calls and messages. No news yet -- hopefully we'll know by Friday. I so appreciate the good thoughts!

Update, 3-5-10: Things are looking good! Won't know for sure until next week, but things are looking good. :)

I Turn Thirty...something.

This particular shot has become a bit of family lore, as the kid in the high chair looks like my son in a dress. Exactly. (I wish I could say the parallels continue and I now look just like my mother. But she's thinner and prettier. Oh well. You can't have it all.)

P.S. The large black spot on the right hand side was our gigantic lab, Oliver. Who I loved, loved, loved, loved. The kind of dog that lets you crawl all over him, giggling and drooling. When you're one. And it's your birthday. Aren't dogs the best? Family members you never, ever forget. Even when you're thirty... something.

Craft In America

My mom is a great Finder. She finds good stuff. All the time. And, frequently, she's finding things on PBS and that are heart-stoppingly awesome.

Last year she turned me onto the PBS series Craft In America. It's not new news -- the series has been out for a while -- but if you haven't seen it... well, I can't recommend it more highly.

You can purchase the series (like I did for Mom at Christmas) in DVD format or comprised as a beautiful coffee table book. Or PBS has kindly made the series available online for free. Watch it here.

For me, watching the series was inspiring in a life-changing sort of way. Granted, I am someone who lives in the world of craft, but I think there's something for everyone in these amazing stories.

My favorite portion, of course, was the section on Julie Chen, the amazing book artist. Find a quick summary here. Or watch the whole segment on Julie in the "Process" chapter of Craft in America.

My Real Boyfriend.

This morning my husband had a little minor surgery. It involved a trip to the hospital and some anesthesia. When I picked him up, the nurse looked at me and said, "He's going to be a little groggy. Take him home and put him to bed. If he gets home and remembers none of this, that's normal. No major decisions today."

To which, Jeff pipes in, "What do you mean no major decisions?"

"Don't buy a car or a house or anything today."

We smile and nod our agreement.

However, on the drive home this is really bothering (inebriated) Jeff. Despite the fact that he's slurring his speech and repeatedly asking the same questions, he thinks he's going to work and buying a house today.

"I mean, that bothers me. I'm just fine. I know what I want. A Toyota Tundra and a house on five acres. Right? I'm thinking straight."

"Yeah, Honey. Sure."

I was tempted to take him to Macy's and ask him if he likes cashmere sweaters. Or maybe the Humane Society and ask him if he likes puppies. But I didn't. I put him to bed.

His Holiness Comes to Washington

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is meeting with President Obama in the White House this morning, so I'll use that event to share this favorite-of-all photos of mine.

Taken almost exactly thirteen years ago today, the photo is starting to show some wear, but my memory of the event isn't fading. We were a lucky group of American undergraduates (our beloved professor and her husband have special ties to His Holiness); lucky enough to meet with The Dalai Lama at his home in Dharamsala and have one hour to ask questions.

You know how, when you look back on your life, there are moments of time -- almost like pin pricks -- that change you and your world view forever? This was one of mine.

The Zax

Is it just me or does it seem like every time you turn on the radio, the TV, or pick up a newspaper "Partisan Politics" smacks you in the face? Partisan this, Filibuster that, Democrats debate, Republicans refute.

Yeah. So, I couldn't help but giggle to myself as I read this yesterday. Have you seen it? Remember it from childhood?

A quick summary:

One day, in the prairie of Prax, came a North-Going Zax and a South-Going Zax. And it happened that both of them came to a place where they bumped. There they stood. Foot to foot. Face to face.

"Look here, now! " said the North-Going Zax. "I say! You are blocking my path! You are right in my way. I'm a North-Going Zax and I always go north. Get out of my way now at let me go forth!" "Who's in whose way?" snapped the South-Going Zax. "I always go south making south-going tracks. So you're in MY way! "

Then the North-Going Zax puffed up his chest with pride. "I never," he said, "take a step to one side. And I'll prove to you that I won't change my ways if I have to keep standing here fifty-nine days."

I bet you can guess where this is going.

Yep, those two silly, stubbon Zax go right on standing there in each other's way.

"Never budge! That's my rule! Never budge in the least! Not an inch to the west! Not an inch to the east! I'll stay here, not budging! I can and I will if it makes you and me and the whole world stand still."

Yeah. Those Zax.

Here's hoping we don't have to build a Zax ByPass over Congress.

Okay, okay. So it's the sick-and-twisted side of me that is posting this in honor of Valentine's Day. But I just think it's hilarious.

I've had this little piece of torn newspaper sitting in my desk for years and every time I unearth it, I crack up. I'll never forget sitting, holding hands with my husband (then fiance), eating an ice cream cone, and laughing hysterically when we read this.

Yeah, it's a little dark. But mostly I think it's a reminder that love -- true, deep, partnership kind of love -- isn't about the sappy stuff. It's about the decision -- a decision you make every day -- to love and be loved. Dontcha think?

Anyway, roses, chocolates and a Valentine don't hurt either. Here's hoping you get everything you want this Valentine's Day. :)

Pretty Liners

I spent my evening cutting pretty liners for some new boxes of letterpress notes. (Well, that and watching Lost.)

This liner is particularly close to my heart, as it's the first print of chiyogami I ever purchased... which was about fourteen years ago while living in Japan.

I'd wandered into this beautiful store in Kyoto filled, floor to ceiling, with paper. The way my heart went pitter-patter, I should have known then that paper would be a big part of my future. (Sadly, I didn't figure out the paper connection for a while.)

Anyway! Here's the liner. The liner I first found over a dozen years ago, bought just one sheet, quietly rolled up and stuck in my backpack. Flash forward to today, and dozens of sheets are being shipped to me from Japan as we speak, in a package filled with tons of paper goodness.

TGIF, guys! We're taking Ben-Ben to the mountain again this weekend. A three-year-old on skis is *way* cute, let me tell you. (I used to teach kids that age to ski, but it's even cuter when it's your own kid. Might have to share some photos on Monday!)

Ranch Wedding

So I thought for a good long time this morning about posting this heavy subject here on my light-hearted blog.

And I'm gonna go for it.

Tonight in L.A. there will be a film premiere. But not one with a red carpet or Brad & Angelina. It's a film, sponsored in part by philanthropists like Warren Buffett, about nuclear war. About a potential nuclear war.

The team of individuals "starring" in this film include two former Secretaries of State, a former Secretary of Defense, and a former U.S. Senator. A team of individuals who have dedicated their lives to this topic.

Writing Notes

I saw this discussed over at one of my very, very favoritest blogs last week and haven't been able to stop thinking about it. We certainly encourage the handwritten note over here at Simple Ink... just not the angry, Post It variety.

If ever I did receive a raging Post It on my door like this from a neighbor, I'd: (1) want to melt into the Earth out of embarrassment/horror and (2) hopefully respond this way.

I'm excited about this new wooden type I picked up recently. The font is elegant and simple -- just what I'd been looking for. But it's big -- about 2" tall -- so what I'll do with it remains to be seen.

Ain't it good to have friends?

I was just sitting here reflecting upon all the wonderful people that have helped Simple Ink along this year. From my husband, to my mother, to a my wonderful web developer, letterpress teacher, blogger friends, and PR talents. And of course all of the wonderful store owners who continually offer encouragement.

Then I stumbled upon these photos from my little guy's 3rd birthday in October. This is my Benjamin (in green) and his bestest buddy, Matthew. We used to be neighbors and the boys saw each other often from the time they were babies. Our move across town last year, different preschool schedules and, well, Life, have conspired to make their visits more and more infrequent. Before the day these pictures were taken, they hadn't seen each other for months. I love that you can see their glee bubbling over. They could not stop laughing and holding hands.

It's great to have friends.

So thanks to Ben & Matthew for reminding me of that -- and thanks to all of the wonderful folks that have been friends to Simple Ink this year. I love you and I don't tell you often enough.

Origami Dragon

Happy New Year! Did you catch the Rose Parade on New Year's Day? I know I'm a paper nerd, but I thought the Origami Dragon float was the best I've ever seen.

And it only took 8,000 roses and 15,000 lemon leaves to create. Now that's a project.

The day after Thanksgiving, we went to the most spectacular light show in Coos Bay. The marine flair to the decorations is a nice nod to the area... and a fun departure from the norm. I'm doing some printing today and listening to my new favorite album, Pacific Dust by The Mother Hips.

My husband first introduced to me to these guys (college comrades of his from Chico, CA in the early 90s) and I've always been a fan, but I'm especially smitten with this new album.

Living in Oregon now I don't often admit to my California Girl roots. (Yeah, us "Calis" are not popular here. Shhhh. Don't tell the neighbors.)

But, well, you can take the girl out of Nor Cal, but you can't take the Nor Cal out of the girl. The Mother Hips make me tear up thinking about my motherland sometimes. I miss that Pacific Dust.

Etsy Revival

I've always loved everything about Etsy -- shopping and selling -- and I'm glad to say that my Etsy shoppe is back up and running. I closed her down for a good long time while swamped with other projects, but I'm glad she's back. Just this week I've had some fun transactions with customers in France and Germany. Cool! (Oh, and I've spent some of that cash on a few great items from other Etsy artists. I'll post photos when the goodies arrive!)

There are just a few items in my shoppe right now, but I'll be adding more as time allows. Yeah, Etsy!

I'm thankful for many things this year -- top on the list is a job I love! -- but I'm also grateful that my parents chose to retire at one of the most beautiful beaches on the Oregon coast.

Today, I'd planned to write about printing a new design. But after seeing this segment on the Today Show this morning, my plans changed.

I followed Stephanie Nielson's story last year: a mother my age with four young children, nearly killed in a plane crash. I first heard about the Nielson family after receiving an email from a store owner suggesting I donate some Simple Ink goods for an online auction to benefit them.

Stephanie's blog, The Nie Nie Diaglouges, is an inspiring collection of creative thoughts and images about motherhood. I remember paging through the blog last year after receiving the donation request, so impressed with her creativity. At that time, some thought Stephanie might not survive her injuries. The money raised would go to a fund for her children.

This is why, when I strolled downstairs this morning and flipped on the TV and saw her there, I nearly fell to my knees. All these months later, I'd fallen into my routine and slowly stopped checking on her progress.

Now strong but still recovering from burns that cover 80% of her body, Stephanie is beautiful, inspiring. Graciousness embodied.

In a recent blog entry about returning home after a year in the hospital, she describes sorting through her craft room and finding a To Do list from days before the crash, a menu for that week, and notes about an upcoming yoga class.

She writes, "I left my house at 8:30 am on Saturday, August 16, 2008 and never returned."

With Thanksgiving almost here, Stephanie reminds us all there is to be thankful for. I, for one, am thankful that she's back.

Little Boy Cars

Over the weekend we worked on a little remodel in our son's bedroom. Yes, the momentous switch from crib to Big Boy Bed. Exciting, indeed.

I mention it here because of these darling little sheets which are a central component to the big change. My little guy is, shall we say, OBSESSED with model cars. I know, I know, you're thinking, "My son (nephew, brother, grandson, etc.) likes little cars too."

No. It's not like that.

It's a clear, clean obsession. Some children have a blankie that soothes them, some maybe a teddy bear. My child has a yellow Hot Wheel he clutches to his chest while he slumbers.

I digress.

Back to the sheets. Aren't they cute? And so much like the Pottery Barn set for which I just couldn't bear to plunk down $50. Needless to say, I was thrilled when Grammy found these for a fraction of the price at T.J. Maxx. Go Grammy.

(I'm getting to the point. I promise.)

My heart also sang when I saw these little sheets because they reminded me of a long-ago-filed-away sketch I'd done of little cars like these. My plan was to create a custom stationery set for a my friend's son. Can't you see it... a row of little cars running across the top of the card with "Aidan" or "Benjamin" or "Your Buddy's Name Here" all in letterpress. And I'd forgotten about it until I saw the sheets.

The press is ready, the sketch is out = cuties coming soon.

Carol Hannah is My Winner

I admit to still (after 6 seasons) being a Project Runway fan. I just eat up every minute. Watching creative people produce spectacular things just with fabric, needle, and thread is riveting.

That said, last night's finale diappointed. Although all three remaining designers created impressive runway shows, there was a clear winner in my eyes.

And she lost. (sigh.)

Snowflakes

My last post revealed that I can, well, sometimes resent the snow. There can be a lot of it here in Bend. And I'm not just saying that. I mean A LOT.

However, when I'm not dwelling on the sheer volume of it, I can appreciate its beauty. The snow where I grew up was much, shall we say, "wetter" (thus the nickname, "Sierra Cement") than here. It fell in globs, not whispering flakes.

In Central Oregon the snow is more like dry powder -- so much that you can see the individual crystalline shapes of the flakes as they fall on your jacket.

It was that first experience actually seeing the intricacy of little snowflakes with my naked eye that inspired one of this year's holiday cards. Well, that and Eckhart Tolle. I discovered The Zen proverb on the front of the cards in his A New Earth.

Everyone needs a little Zen in her life... especially around the holidays... right?

Snoopy Doopy

Ben pulled this old book of Snoopy cartoons off the shelf today and begged me to read them. At age three, I thought he might not appreciate Snoopy's sometime-nuanced humor, but he giggled right along (whether he got it or not).

When he turned the page to the cartoon above, I noticed that Snoopy and I have the same feelings about winter's arrival.

I feel ya, Snoop. I'm not ready either.

I'm listening to the audio version of this book as I pack up some wholesale orders this morning.

Originally, I picked it up at the library because Barbara Corcoran (you may recognize her from Shark Tank or her appearances on The Today Show), is actually a personal friend of my godmother, Enid, who worked as a broker in Ms. Corcoran's real estate empire for years.

Enid has told me many funny stories about Barbara (should I call her that?) and, in sum, she's clearly one of the smartest, funniest, spunkiest women you'd like to know. Not to mention, it's inspiring to hear how she started a billion dollar empire with only $1,000. Yep, $1,000 she borrowed from a friend.

And how much to I love her title: "Use What You've Got: And Other Business Lessons I Learned From My Mom."

Because, isn't it so true... Mom is the smartest person we know.

Vandercook Model

As a bona fide paper geek, I got such a kick out of stumbling across this all-paper model of a Vandercook letterpress in honor of the company's 100th anniversary. This press is an exact model of the fist press I ever used... *hug*.

Kudos to the very talented team at Logos Graphics who created this baby! How cool is that?!

Heard, Understood, Acknowledged

On this Veteran's Day, I suggest reading an editorial written by David Ignatius in the Washington Post, Standing Tall in Harm's Way.

Today, because I have no family member or close friend currently serving in the military, I'll be thinking of this mother, highlighted in Ignatius' column:

"... I saw many images that conveyed the pain of long and repeated deployments. One I remember vividly was a noncommissioned officer at an air base in the Gulf. She was talking by computer with her kids, trying to help keep things together at home and school just a little longer. "Mommy will be home soon," she kept saying. "Mommy will be home soon." But that homecoming is probably still months away."

We're thinking of you, Mommy. And of the many Fathers, Brothers, Sisters and Sons separated from their families today. And of my Uncle John, my father's only brother, who we lost on his third tour in Vietnam years ago. I never knew him.

Shades of the Ritz

Those of you who know me well know that I'm not a Ritzy kinda girl.

Seriously.

But this week's stay at the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel - thanks to Jeff' conference - was one I'd happily repeat. Some of the opulence bordered on the ridiculous (see photo of gilded fire hydrant above), but hidden within the extravagance ran a clean line of simplicity. I particularly loved the bunched lilies repeated down every hallway. The tangerine-colored flowers were all bound with tangerine-colored wire and stood at an interesting angles.

Simple. Elegant. Creative.

It was a good reminder that beauty - and good design - is so often in the details.

A (Not) Real Housewife of Orange County

We're in Laguna Beach today and everything could not be more beautiful. Thanks to the business conference Jeff is attending, we're staying at a lovely hotel here and, well, we've been joking about going from dancing hippies in Golden Gate Park one day to circling among The Real Housewives of Orange County the next.

In places like this my gut often screams, "I don't fit in!" (if Laguna Beach is a Mercedes convertible, Bend Oregon is a Subaru Outback; yesterday's dancing hippies were more my speed), but thanks to all the sweet smiles of passersby and the restful beat of the waves, I've muffled my gut reaction to something closer to, "Just relax."

Off to meet with some new retailers... and sneak in a little more beach time. Home tomorrow (and friends tell me there has been snow already); better make the most of today.

Hardly Strictly SF

On our way south, we stopped off for a short time in San Francisco to hit the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival.

Free Show + Beautiful Weather + Golden Gate Park = Lots of Folks.

But, despite the crowds that at times brought me too close for comfort with my fellow bluegrass fans (in Ben's words, "Mama, I can't see you under all the people!"), it was seriously good fun. More than anything, it reminded me how I love and miss the Bay Area. If only I could box up the Eucalyptus trees and bring them home. Then I'd miss them less.

Maybe I'll have to settle for sending that stationery design of Eucalyptus leaves to press sometime soon.

Yes, that'll have to do.

California Dreamin'

We're headed to southern California today for about a week. I'll be trying to mix in as much family time as I can during a mostly-work kind of trip. We stayed at this same stunning location two years ago... the above is a photo from our hotel room during that visit, which seems like yesterday. How time flies.

Yay, she's here! I'm smitten with my new little table top Kelsey press. I certainly won't be cranking out thousands of greeting cards with her help, but I sure will be able to have some fun. The project ideas are welling up in my brain more quickly than I can write them down...

Top on the list, some little custom thank you cards for Ben. His 3rd birthday is next week and, with the way his grandparents dote on him, he'll have some serious thank yous to write. Happy October, everyone!

Bringing Home Baby

Today is an exciting day here in Simple Ink Land... we're bringing home a new press! A local studio is liquidating some of their presses and, thanks to my beloved mentor, I'm thrilled to be the new owner of one.

Winter Wedding

This wedding invitation for a winter ceremony here in Bend just came off the press. I love how it came together. Printed in silver and cranberry inks, it makes me feel ready for the holidays on this cold, blustery day. And the thick Somerset paper makes me happy no matter what is printed on it...

...The branch image is actually from a photo I took last winter while I was sitting in the car waiting for my husband to run an errand -- goes to show that you never know when inspiration will strike!

American Craft Retailer's Expo (ACRE) 2009

Even though a few months have passed, I'd be remiss if I never mentioned ACRE. My first-ever foray into the huge world of wholesale trade shows, I admit to being a ball of nerves in the final days before the show opened.

However, despite any anticipatory jitters, it was a wonderful experience. The organizers were top-notch, the other artisans were way fun, and the retailers who came to shop exceeded my expectations. I'm already looking forward to next year.

There's a lot of doom-and-gloom spread about the economy these days and not enough talk about the talented store owners not just staying afloat in these times, but thriving. There may not have been the volume of shoppers seen in previous years, but the ones present were the cream of the crop.

So, if you're an artist considering participating in a wholesale show or a retailer thinking of attending, my advice is to go for it. There may not be the masses you're used to seeing, but there's a silver lining to everything.

Retailer Spotlight: Bartleby's Letterpress Emporium

Attending my first-ever trade show this summer was... well, it was many things. (More on that coming soon.) But one of the absolute highlights was meeting fellow letterpress printer, Marty Brown, the brain behind Letterary Press. I'd been a fan of Marty's work for some time (having first seen it on Etsy), and meeting her in person did not disappoint. Funny, smart, creative, personable. I could go on.

A few months ago, Marty shared that she would soon be opening her own retail space in Portland, Oregon as a complement to her work at Letterary Press. And, as of this month, the doors for Bartleby's Letterpress Emporium are officially open! And this is no average stationery store; Marty has her beautiful Chandler & Price presses on display along with all of the fabulous paper goods. Run, don't walk, letterpress fans!

This may be the perfect excuse for a jaunt to Portland soon...

Congratulations, Marty! It's an honor for Simple Ink to be a part of Bartleby's.

Library Pick: Half the Sky

My resolution of the month has been to turn off the TV. (Okay, okay, I'm still watching the Grey's Anatomy premiere tonight.) But, most evenings, in lieu of an hour or two of spaced-out viewing time, I'm plugging into our wonderful local library.

My pick for this week is Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, just out this month.

The authors argue that the key to worldwide social and economic progress sits cupped in the hands of women. They offer ways we all can help draw out this powerful potential. Among them is a personal favorite: support a woman in business. With loans as low as $50, women in many countries can start businesses of their own, leading to a cascade of improvements in their own lives, the lives of their children, the status of the communities, and so on.

Holiday Cards

It has been hot, hot, hot here in Bend this week, but my mind is on snow-covered branches.

I'm just itching to unveil the new boxed sets of holiday cards I've printed for this year; I've wanted to produce boxed sets like these for a long time, and the feedback I received at ACRE finally put me over the edge. They're going to look so pretty all boxed up and ready to go... I can hardly wait!

Central Oregon Day

It's easy to become blase about the place you live. At first you see the beauty, all it has to offer, but after a time the rudimentary details take over. What's the quickest route to the grocery store? Could the bike lanes not be just the tiniest bit wider? Why is that one street always flooded...?

But on Saturday a simple walk (a stone's throw from my home) reminded me of Bend. The real Bend. The Bend that makes living here more than rudimentary. What makes it exceptional.

Glad to see you, Friend.

Inspiration

Over the last year I have enjoyed tremendous design inspiration from books we acquire for our son. I have an affinity for Japanese design, so it's no wonder I've been smitten with Japanese illustrators.

I am especially taken with this new pick, Emily's Balloon, by author/illustrator Komako Sakai. The images are elegant and tell a heartfelt story with very few words. A perfect combination. I love the hand-lettered look of the book's title, too.

Perhaps I also enjoy Emily's Balloon because it's the tale of a toddler who receives the gift of a balloon at the grocery store... falls deeply in love... only to have the balloon float away. (Despite Mommy's best efforts to keep it grounded.)

As many of you know, I'm currently designing, assembling and promoting my line of greeting cards and boxed stationery. However, the majority of the press work is being done by a (very talented) collaborator.

But last night I took my first thrilling step toward becoming the letterpress printer I hope to be. I have been researching, studying, watching instructional video after video about letterpress for several years now... and last night I finally did a little "doing."

It was a small step -- setting a my first lead type in order to print a little custom project -- but it was thrilling. Breathing in the studio... the smell of the presses, the ink, the quiet... the wonderful company of my new found mentor. Well, it was like being home.

Suffice it to say, it was a good day. Thanks, Ezma.

ACRE - Coming out of the Closet

I made a big decision this week.

I'll be showing my little line of stationery products to the world at my first-ever trade show... in just about two months. Right now Simple Ink feels like a small, secret outpost known well in my hometown and by an intimate (and beloved) circle of retailers around the country but not beyond that network.

So this show feels like a big leap -- especially in these economic times -- but I think it's time for Simple Ink to come out of the closet.

Loving Two

Even though this blog will be primarily about letterpress printing, stationery design and running a small business, I surely won't be able to resist periodically blogging about my two year-old son who keeps me in stitches every day.

Last night he bounced happily down the stairs dragging one of his (newly) favorite books behind him. It contains the most beautiful illustrations of animal families all bedding down for the night.

Lately Ben has a knack for memorizing the titles of his books, so when his father asked him what the title of this book was, it cracked me up when Ben replied, "I dunno. Chickens Go To Sleep?"

This first post feels a bit like that moment when you jump into the deep end, not knowing if how deep your dive will take you. But I have been enjoying the web logs of so many artists for so long now, I've decided to throw my hat into the ring.

My almost-two-year-old son has a favorite television show: Little Bill. We try to limit his exposure to the TV, but I find this little show so charming that it's on the very short list of What Ben Is Allowed To Watch.

Anyway, I mention this here, in my opening post, because I love (Bill Cosby's) Little Bill because the tiny cartoon incarnation greets everyone he meets with the salutation, "Hello, Friend."

How different would the world be if we all greeted each other that way?

So, here I go, greeting you, my treasured reader, the way I think we all should say hello for the first time: Hello, friend.
